I agree it could be a hoax.  But note that this is not Duke University's
official response to the student's official application, but an individual
professor's response to an inquiry he received by e-mail.  If the e-mail is
real, that professor was way out of line to say what he did to these
applicants, and the university will probably take some action against him.
Anybody can write to the president of Duke University and ask whether the
e-mail was real or not.
