From: akroschewski-AT-web.de Date: Fri, 18 Jan 2002 18:05:12 +0100 Subject: ASNEL's conference 14th Annual Conference of the Association for the Study of the New Literatures in English (ASNEL), University of Erfurt, May 8-11, 2002 "Embracing the Other: Addressing Xenophobia in the New Literatures in English" Human beings have devised a great variety of strategies for dealing with the phenomenon of otherness or alterity in all its different guises. While the Other is often considered a valuable and necessary challenge to the all too familiar and too old and entrenched positions, a fertile alternative engaging us in a fruitful dialogiue that takes us beyond the borders of our limited knowledge and practices, it is also conceived by some as a threat from outside, a menace that is out to destroy what has grown to be dear to us. Such anxieties also find their expression in xenophobic attitudes and in an aggressive mental provincialism which can unfortunately still be observed today. The New Literatures in English, with their far-ranging engagements with hybrid situations of multiculturalism, migration, diaspora, etc. in (post-)colonial and global contexts, provide us with a rich field for the study of how the Other can be embraced and how xenophobia can be addressed. We welcome papers providing both theoretical analyses of the issues raised by the conference topic and/or individual case studies based on readings of anglophone texts from the New Literatures in English in the EFL classroom. Selected papers will be published in the Cross/Clutural series (Amsterdam: Rodopi). Proposals (preferably as e-mail) with abstracts (up to 300 words) should be sent to Prof. Dr. Heinz Antor Universität zu Köln Englishes Seminar Albertus-Magnus-Platz D-50923 Köln H.Antor-AT-uni-koeln.de More information will soon be provided at www.anglistenverband.de/GNEL/erfurt/html ________________________________________________________________ Keine verlorenen Lotto-Quittungen, keine vergessenen Gewinne mehr!
