It's a mixed media hybridization of poetry, biography, fiction, ideographs, western/eastern medicine and a hundred other representative forms -- that deals with a number of themes including diasporic identity, generational transculturation, nationalism, and female subjectivity. It is without a doubt a challenging text. The collection "Writing Self, Writing Nation" edited by Hyun Yi Kang (Third Woman Press) is out of print, but has good starting points for interpretation. And if you don't already have Gloria Anzaldua's _Borderlands (La Frontera)_ on your list, you might want to look there. It's an essential work of Chicano border studies. .vince -----Original Message----- From: owner-postcolonial-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu [mailto:owner-postcolonial-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu]On Behalf Of Lou Caton Sent: Friday, March 22, 2002 7:24 AM To: postcolonial list Subject: suggestions for course on "Crossing Borders" Dear List, Would list-members have suggestions for a course on "crossing borders"? The full title at this point is as follows: "At the Edge of Expression: The Culture, Politics, Philosophy, Art, and Literature of Crossing Borders." I'm gathering articles, short stories, poetry, novels, and non-fiction book-length responses to this concern. The course is for strong, upper-division students, so it can have a challenging bite to it. It should suggest ways in which one can read across definitional lines. Crucial terms might include hybridity, disaspora, transculturation, subaltern positioning, mestizo, gender bending, post-humans, cyborgs, and social "passing." All works should be contemporary. Non-Western preferred. Translations ok. Many thanks!
