Subject: RE: The state of this list---THE DEATH OF POSTCOLONIALISM

i think that this list is representing the state ofthe
postcolonial condition of our times: postcolonialism
as a movement and a discourse has failed. ad i think
that Said's statement and realisation of the fact that
"we failed as educator" proves its impasse-among other
issues. Postcolonialism as a political discourse has
paved the way for neocolonialism to raise/flourish
when the West was/is exposed to products of English
Literatures (with an "s") and Francophone literatures
and American "ethnic literature".

it has also reinforced the existence of a center -the
West- ,hence the acceptance of the theory and movement
by so many westerners. these latters are learning the
"others" points of view from a epistimological point
of view, views that can help them grasp their position
in the global world. i strongly believe that were it
not for the fact that writers like Achebe, Sanghor,
Rushdie, etc. write in Western languages, Western
scholars would never look at them as "great" writer
and poets. and even the translated works are very well
chosen-available to open the Western world to its
"threatening" works that come from without.
for so many Americanists, Postcolonialism has allowed
them to adopt idea coming from the East and applying
them to the American writers of the margin (Blacks,
Native americans, Chicano/as, etc.). Many of them have
no idea what colonialism means in reall ife because
they were never exposed to it.
