hello,
have you identified specifc countries/cultures that you will be addressing? obviously "non-western world" includes many, many places surely all of which won't be covered in your class.

ok... here are some suggestions for remarkable novels, which are excellent examples of wonderful writing and keen insights about people and cultures:
Disgrace, J.M. Coetzee (about post-apartheid S. Africa)
A Map of Love (colonial and post-colonial Egypt)
The Shadow of the Sun, Ryszard Kapuscinksi (this is a little different in that it is a collection of essays based on his 20 -30 years of travels throughout Africa -- in Colonial and PostColonial times. vivid illustrations of life and extremely well written)

just a few. i'd be interested to see your final list as i'm always very interested in good literature on the subject.

best regards,
susanna

The course title is "Lands and Peoples of the 'Non-Western World'", and I will cover the following concepts (for example): colonialism, development, neocolonialism, nationalism, gender issues, etc. I would like to have the students read novels that demonstrate the personal, human side of some of the issues we discuss in class, and as a way to introduce different perspectives from various regions we are discussing. I hope to compile a list of at least 25 books from around the world that touch on issues related to the course, which are accessible to a lower-division undergraduate class. Can anyone offer suggestions? I'd be happy to send out a compilation of suggestions to the list.
