Subject: cultural identity?

Okay, a prospectus-writer needs help. I'm looking for Ameican novels where the development
of a sense of "cultural identity" is shot through with (and depends on) a shameful ambivalence.
I''ve looked at Scarlet Letter, Woman Warrior, and Black Boy so far. Toying with rereading
American Tragedy too. Apologies for bringing up something not strictly poco, but my sense
is, it's close enough that the thoughts of folks on this list could probably be a huge help to me.
Thanks!
