Dear Dr Margurite Nolan

I wish you had clearly indicated what specific dimensions of postcolonial guilt is of your interest. As far as Iranian culture is concerned , certain intellectuals dealt with the issue. Darius Shayegan in his CULTURAL SCHIZOPHRENIA, orignially written in French and then translated into English, is of the opinion that we Orientals have taken a leave from history. The psychology of the guilt is analysed by him in his previous books on the relation between the East and the West such as ASIA AGAINST THE WEST, originally written in Persian.

Jalal Al-Ahmad's OCCIDENTOSIS : A PLAGGUE FROM THE WEST (there are three translations of this text in English) is a polemic on the problematic of intellecuals as carriers of the disease of Westernization. Influenced by Julian Benda's The Betrayal of the Intellecutals, Al-e Ahmad puts much of the blames of identity crisis of the Orient on INtellecuals.

I also suggest Mehrzad Boroujerdi's IRANIAN INTELLECUTALS.

Wish you all the Best

Hi,

I was wondering if anybody knows of any good theoretical material on the
question of postcolonial guilt.

Cheers, Maggie
