There are many books in anthropology on this topic.  Some of them are quite
old, and were researched and written under the auspices of colonial
governments.  This does not mean that such works are necessarily invalid.
Anthropologists have sought answers to all the questions you ask.  Different
stateless societies have had different social organizations.  Try works by
Meyer Fortes, E.E. Evans-Pritchard, Douglas Oliver,  and a host of others.
Or do a Google search for "stateless societies".  Or "stateless societies"
"nomadic".  Plenty of stuff there.
