Shakespeare Society of Southern Africa 6th Triennial Congress
25 to 28 June 2003, Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, South Africa

COLONIAL SHAKESPEARE: PERFORMANCE,
TRANSLATION and RECEPTION

The Conference will interpret the term 'Colonial' very
broadly to include all cultural participation in the
Shakespearean diaspora. Papers are invited on the
following topics:-

1) Comparative performance and production at different
times and places;
2) The indigenisation of Shakespeare;
3) Colonial Shakespeare in film and television;
4) The Shakespeare text and colonial politics;
5) Shakespeare and the colonial book trade;
6) The colonial touring companies;
7) Shakespeare and colonial education;
8) Shakespeare reviewing in the colonies;
9) The influence of metropolitan Shakespeare companies
on colonial Shakespeare performances;
10) Other relevant topics.

Please send abstracts of approximately 250-500 words,
giving the title of the paper plus a short CV. Abstracts
should be received by 30 NOVEMBER 2002, and papers
by 31 MAY 2003.  Papers should be 30 minutes in length.

THE 15 MAY, 2003, IS REQUIRED BY OUR BANK TO BE
PAID ELECTRONICALLY.
Registration fee: South African delegates: R600
Overseas delegates: R700 (includes R100 forex charge)
The Registration fee is payable by all those attending the
conference (presenters of papers, members of seminars,
ordinary and branch members, non-members, observers
and other participants).  Visitors attending single lectures
pay R30 at the door.

Saturday 28 June: The 4th day of Congress: Theme: "Why
Shakespeare?"  In addition to registered Congress
delegates, teachers and High School pupils (grade 10-12)
are invited to attend the Educational Forum "Why
Shakespeare?"  The fee per person for the day's
programme (inclusive of entertainment, light refreshments
and lunch) will be R75.  Booking is advisable. Dr Manfred
Schroenn's opening address will be followed by a Plenary
Session, chaired by Dr Hennie van der Mescht.  The
theme will be further explored through the medium of a
workshop and theatrical entertainment.

Delegates requiring acceptance of a paper or confirmation
of registration in order to apply for funding from their
home institutions should request this as soon as
possible.
