Gandhi built his Phoenix settlement is now an informal settlement known as Bambayi, being the isiZulu rendering of the name, adopted because many of the residents came from Bombay as a port of departure. I do not know if the market gardeners that first settled there were predominantly Hindi or Gujarati; I assume Hindi because the North Indians tended to be in an area for a while before building a temple and I don't know of any temples in the area.
