Academics and intellectuals are invested with a kind of cultural authority and this authority can be used for good, particularly if many of the widely-respected figures in our profession raise their heads above the parapet and start voicing dissent in the popular media at the glaring non-sequiturs in the case that's being made for war at present, and while they're at it, dissent at Bush's ludicrous claim to be doing good for all of humanity regardless of any contrary opinions all of humanity might hold. An intellectual debate is one that Bush is constitutionally unable to win. The war against error should be taken to him on a global scale.
