As one of the editors of the Routledge Reader -which is now 6 years old - I 
have to say that we would have loved to include more canonical works as well 
but the permission budget that we had to work with for the whole collection 
wouldn't even cover one short verse by Walcott. Permissions budgets are a 
major determining element for most collections and yet rarely taken into 
account. 

On a more positive note, we are thinking about a second volume and lots of 
email evidence of the need for mainstream texts, fuller extracts etc may help 
persuade the publisher to be more genrous this time round. Please reply to me 
off the list if you have suggestions, constructive criticism...
