Affirmative action helps to level the playing field in order to create 
equal opportunity for members of groups suffering the consequences of 
past and continuing discrimination.  "Equal opportunity" is 
demonstrably absent in the U.S, (See the recent CNN.com article 
reporting that resumes with "white sounding first names elicited 50 
percent more responses than ones with black-sounding names":

I still think, after all these years, that the best book on the ethical 
and legal imperative of affirmative action programs is Ronald Dworkin's 
_Taking Rights Seriously_.
