I would recommend Jyoti Puri's book _Woman, Body, Desire in Post-Colonial
India: Narratives of Gender and Sexuality_ (Routledge, 1999). I read this
in manuscript but I presume the finished book was much the same; it contains
a chapter on Mehta's 'Fire' which forms a central part of Puri's analysis.
I too liked Mehta's film, in fact reading Puri's ms. was what encouraged me
to find a copy of video.

I too thought that Nair's 'Kama Sutra' was horrible when I saw it on
release, and I have never felt any desire to revisit it. I wonder what
others on the list thought of that film?
