I think Margret is referring to India: the social anthropology of a 
civilization by Cohn.  The publisher is supposed to be putting out a new 
edition, but I haven't seen it in the States yet. Cohn has a few critical 
essays on caste that might be of some help.

Gavin Flood also has a very good book, Intro to Hinduism, which might help 
you.
