You may be thinking of _Season of Migration to the North_, by Tayeb Salih,
but it is set in Sudan, not Senegal. I have taught it several times, with
and without _Othello_, and I recommend it highly.

Subject: Need help with intro to lit class

I am working on my Fall 2004 syllabus on introduction to literary studies
which I would like to focus on the story of Othello. I plan to start with
Shakespeare's play. And then go onto a novel that retells the Othello story
in the context of 20th century Senegal.
-- Would anyone know of the name of the novelist and the title of the novel?

-- Would the writer be Ousmane Sembene?
-- If I am mistaken can anyone suggest another novel that has reworked this
story?
-- Also, can anyone suggest any poetry written in 19th century US on themes
of race that could fit in with the Othello story?
Thanks in advance,
Nandita
