Since September 11, 2001, the emphasis on global security has increased.
Even in Oceania, the rhetoric of crisis together with a sense of
preparedness to face such calamities is obvious. The nations of Oceania
have faced the challenges of maintaining and adapting indigenous
traditions whilst being open to the migrant and settler "others"
introduced by colonialism. One of the most pressing contemporary
challenges is to accommodate the process of globalization as it impacts
on societies and cultures and forces a re-examination of identities at
all levels, especially in the research fields of literature and language
studies. We must examine the impact of such crises and changes on the
cultures of Oceania and invite debate from any relevant perspective.
