Subject: FW: SPACLALS Apia, Samoa November 2004 Date: Sat, 3 Jul 2004 16:03:54 -0700 SPACLALS 9th TRIENNIAL CONFERENCE "CULTURE, CRISIS AND CHANGE IN OCEANIA" http://www.nus.edu.ws/events/South_Pacific.html WHEN: Wednesday, 24 November to Friday, 26 November 2004 WHERE: The National University of Samoa Le Papaigalagala Campus Apia, Samoa CHIEF SPONSORS: SPACALS/NUS Call for papers: Since September 11, 2001, the emphasis on global security has increased. Even in Oceania, the rhetoric of crisis together with a sense of preparedness to face such calamities is obvious. The nations of Oceania have faced the challenges of maintaining and adapting indigenous traditions whilst being open to the migrant and settler "others" introduced by colonialism. One of the most pressing contemporary challenges is to accommodate the process of globalization as it impacts on societies and cultures and forces a re-examination of identities at all levels, especially in the research fields of literature and language studies. We must examine the impact of such crises and changes on the cultures of Oceania and invite debate from any relevant perspective. Abstracts of approximately 200 words for proposed papers of 30 minutes' duration may be submitted with a 50-word bio-note, including institutional address and contact email, by 30 July 2004 now extended to 31 August, 2004: Professor Silafau Sina Vaai Department of English and Foreign Languages National University of Samoa P.O.
