        One thing that kills a performance is unimaginative writing. The
worst puppet shows are the "message" shows that preach and talk down to
their audience. If you want to get a point across, that's wonderful, just
don't bore your audience to tears doing it.

        Another problem I see in a lot of shows aimed at kids is the awful
characterization. Characters are the key to your show. So many either sound
like they've waltzed out of a 1950's primary reader or they're clones of
what you see on Sesame Street. I was treated to John Pattison's "The Not
The Mr. Dressup Show" (if you're not familiar with Canadian TV you won't
get the title) show at the recent Ontario Puppetry Arts festival and one
thing that just made the show was the hilarious puppets. THAT's what it's
about.

        After all, if the audience can't connect/identify with your
characters, why will they care about your show?
