sorry, thought the last few posts made this clear but obviously they didn't.
the swazzle is a small device that the puppeteer puts in his mouth and holds
against the roof of said mouth with his tongue. it functions like a kazoo and
turns the puppeteer's voice into the kazoo-like sound that punch traditionally
has, especially in england. once upon a time, by the way, according to world
authority George Speaight, the swazzle sound was associated with puppets
generally and only later came to be associated with punch in particular. anyway,
the puppeteer lowers the swazzle to do the other voice and then repositions it
to do punch.

as i mentioned in another post, the swazzle renders punch difficult to
understand (although not completely unintelligible). in a kinder, gentler era,
punch was a two-man (yes, man) show -- the puppeteer inside, and a "bottler"
standing outside, talking to the puppets and moving the show along. the bottler
would largely repeat whatever punch said, so people would understand. he acted
sorta like Fran Allison with Kukla and Ollie (younger readers are directed to
their history books). the bottler also collected the take from the audience.
and generally packed up, schlepped and set up the show for the puppeteer. now
there's a tradition worth re-instituting!
