Carol, I have found it from time to time in Art supply stores, especially
those that are connected with painting and decorating supplies or even when
a part of a lumber yard.  I would think that in Denver your best bet might
be art supply stores, particularly those that might be heavy on sculpting
supplies.  Other woods that are relatively soft, grain free and east to
carve are sometimes called "sugar pine" and other names.
