Hi--
Basswood is the carver's wood of choice for a quick carve, soft, no
grain, but not quite so soft as balsa. I use rock maple because it is tough

as iron and our puppets get lots of abuse. It takes power tools to carve
it,
though. You can get a carver's magazine and access the resources in the back

among the classifieds and ads.One place to acquire it:

     Woodcraft
     210 Wood County Industrial Park
     P.O. Box 1686Parkersburg, WV 26102-1686
     1-800-225-1153

Their catalogue is for sale in better magazine racks. Nearest to you
location
of a Woodcraft store, Sacramento. They also sell the best woodcarving
tools.
But normal hardware or lumber establishments will not carry it; it is a
specialty wood.

Alice
