Subject: Getting Professional Help


As part of the Henson Festival in September UNIMA-USA is sponsoring a
number of discussions, panels and events, including this year's
announcement of UNIMA-USA Citation of Excellence winners.

As part of this effort I will be leading a round-table discussion aimed at
helping professional puppeteers articulate what kind of support they
need/want from UNIMA-USA, especially in the area of making the transition
>from touring company to a resident company (i.e., a company that performs
and is responsible for its own performance space).

Discussion will be among puppeteers; this is not an opportunity for the
organization to address these concerns-that will come later, if at all.
Discussion will focus on:

1)   Goals;
2)   Obstacles to achieving those goals;
3)   Solutions for overcoming those obstacles.

My belief is that puppeteers can come with numbers 1 & 2 themselves, and in
conjunction with UNIMA-USA work on #3. The result of this discussion will
be a list of subjects that will be presented to the Board of UNIMA-USA to
take under advisement.

This opportunity grew out of an electronic discussion I had with Mark
Levenson, and it was his idea to give that discussion a flesh-and-blood
forum in New York, the exact date and time of which are to be finalized.

But since this started here, I will ask you all to contribute your ideas
following the above format and answering this question: How can UNIMA-USA,
working with professional resident puppet theatres throughout the US and
Canada, help performance companies become resident companies?

I appreciate your help in setting this agenda; I hope that I will be able
to see/meet you in New York. If you can't make it, please feel most free to
contribute here.
