I used to gerry rig headsets using inexpensive mics as well. I did this
for a very long time. I finally broke down and bought a headset. The
difference was dramatic. The vocal quality, clarity, dependability and
comfort are definitely worth the price. 
I currently use an Audio Technica ATM 75 that costs about $140.00. I use
this mic everyday. It is my second one. The first one went in for
repairs after a year and a half, the out of warranty work cost about 70.
00 and the company just replaced the mic.
I have also used wireless both headsets and laviliers and if possible I
prefer the wired because they are so much more dependable.
