From: grubidge-AT-vaxa.cis.uwosh.edu Date: Wed, 25 Sep 1996 15:29:10 -0600 Subject: molding, casting, rear projection screens, etc. If anyone needs technical assistance and is a member of P of A that person can request information from the variety of consultants listed in the membership directory. But maybe not all consultants are on line or many puppeteers are not members of P of A (shame --ha!). Solution #2 -- if you are near a university which has a theatre department, there will be helpful books in the university library and most university libraries allow non-students/faculty to read in the stacks (even if they do not allow non-students/faculty to check out books. This might vary with private universities -- any with state support have to serve the public. Solution #3 -- if you live near a university with a theatre department, you could ask for information from the technical director/designer (even if they know nothing about puppetry, they do know prop making molding, casting and have special journals or directories with materials sources. A couple of books we refer to are: THE THEATRE PROPS HANDBOOK, and THE PROP BUILDER'S MOLDING AND CASTING HANDBOOK, both by James Thurston, betterway Publications, Inc. White Hall, Virginia. These paperback books are reasonable, about $20 each and can be special ordered through most bookstores. A special directory called "The Chicago Prop Finders Handbook, 1647 W. Fulton, 2nd Floor, Chicago, Il 60612-2579 is a resouce we use -- I don't know if other hubs of theatre activity have their own such directories. Then "THEATRE CRAFTS INTERNATIONAL" puts out an annual "Resources Directory". For more information you can write to TCI, P. O. Box 470, Mount Morris, Il. 61054-0470. This last reference might have a few outdated addresses after a year or two, but for the most part is well worth the money if one considers time = money. Hope this helps someone.
