Subject: plaster casting-- be careful, and read Thurston James

I have heard first-hand accounts of people having lost fingertips
>from "casting body parts in plaster". I don't know what kind of plaster,
or what the details are, but I know for a fact that some ways of doing
this are really dangerous, and others are perfectly safe, and it bears
getting good advice before doing it.

Along these lines, Thurston James has a series of superb books on
molding and casting. I think the most relevant one is titled
"Prop Makers' Molding and Casting Handbook." Anyone who's going to do
casting and molding would get a lot out of this. He gives sources for
alginate, and detailed instructions on how to use it, for instance.

Here in the Bay area I've seen this book at stores like Borders and
university bookstores; anyone could special order it too.
