I think most people can agree that political correctness has in many ways gone too far. However, before we return to the days when public school children could be forced to pray, and sing, to a God they did not not worship (or singled out for ridicule by their fellows for not participating in such school- and government-sanctioned activities), let's remember that the movement now maligned as "political correctness" arose out of some very real problems, primarily a lack of respect for our fellow citizens. While we've made some progress since the 1950s, I think we'd be hard pressed to conclude that we now suffer from too much mutual respect in society. A middle course that acknowledges the concerns of all might be better than returning to an era that required these remedies in the first place.
