Subject: Re: What can puppets do best?

After seeing a college production of "The Wonderings of Oddysious (sp?)"
Where all the characters were puppets (Bunraku style mostly) I realised that
puppets are extremely good at representing non-human characters. In this
particular production all the puppets that represented humans just didn't
work to well, and in the style of this production I would have rather seen
humans portraying all the human roles. But for all the non-human characters
the puppets (all at least 6' high) were wonderful.
In other human theater plays, puppets can do fantastic jobs at
representing things like Ghosts, Dragons, etc.

But as for limits to what puppets should do... I said above the puppets
representing people didn't work well, but I think this is only true for that
production. A few years after seeing that, I went to a few PofA festivals,
and changed my mind after seeing some good shows. It is all a matter of the
creativity of the artist and there isn't any set limit.
