I think Prof Clark has many valid points, but would add that there is an 
arena of puppet use that may well keep the art form alive and developing 
that was not mentioned.  I am a local church pastor who has used puppets 
to help me deliver concepts in ways mere "preaching" or storytelling 
couldn't. And the appeal isn't simply to the children.  I have adults 
who will come to me weeks after a particularly lively puppet visit with 
comments about how much the "children" enjoyed the puppet, and how much 
they appreciated the insight shared.  Frequently the twinkle in the eye 
conveys that they too were a child for a time while viewing the lesson 
that was fun.

May we always be able to see the more inclusive nature of life and 
community!
