        There is plenty of work out there, the trick is making the
connections and getting a "foot in the door" so that you hear about
opportunities when they pop up.

        Good skills to have (especially for film SFX) are experience with
scuplture, foam latex, mold making, elecetronics - in short it's good to be
a jack of all trades (most of the professional puppet builders I know are).

        If you're putting together a demo reel just make the content itself
good. Don't worry about flashy computer graphics and editing & other flashy
video stuff. People spot all sizzle/no steak flashy garbage easy. Stress
quality, not quanity. The people evaluating your work will be looking to
see that you have a good understanding of the fundamentals of SFX puppet
building.

        Of course, if you can have a great demo reel that looks slick too,
more power to you! :)
