My friend Mike Graham (Spring Valley Puppet Theater) charges somewhere around twenty cents a mile to and from a performance. He calculates it by using the mileage charts on road maps to major points and adjusts accordingly for those distances from those points to his perfomance site. For a "first" performance in any given place, he estimates the mileage, but then keeps track of the actual mileage for (hopefully) subsequent visits. The travel fees are listed separately from his performance fees but included in the final price and are quoted "up front". No surprises. Not that you asked, but if his travel requires that he stay overnight say, at a motel, the cost of that is passed on to the sponsor. If he is doing a "tour" then the costs are spread out so that each sponsor shares in the expense. Again, all of this is dealt with "up front". Hope this helps.
