I think telling stories with images rather than words is probably quite
old, and of course quite central to puppet theater.  Cf. Robert Smythe's
posting of examples of this, Bread and Puppet has done a number of
wordless (or almost wordless) shows.  There is of course the era of silent
film to consider in this respect, among other things.

Theory about the function of images and other objects in performance, as
distinct from words, is developed by Prague School and Moscow School
semiologists, such as Bogatyrev, Veltrusky, Honzl, and others; Frank
Proschan in the US does so..... But look at Kleist's essay as well, it's
about this, as is a lot of Edward Gordon Craig's work.  Loie Fuller in the
1890s did this, which opens up onto the world of dance: bigtime stories
without words!
