Subject: Victorian Puppeteers in America

Hi All!

I just received a letter from a man in England who asked my help as
the Marionette Consultant for tha P of A. While I know a lot about the
building of and the Manipulation of Marionettes, I know very little
about the History of Marionettists in America before 1920. I'm Posting
his letter to see if anyone out there has any info. Please send E-mails
to me and I'll forward them to him with the proper credit given to
everyone who responds. The letter is as follows:

12th May 1997

Dear David Syrotiak,

I have published many articles relating to my research into the
history of Victorian marionette companies and would very much like to
find out more about the time some of them spent in America.

The history of Bullock is now fairly well documented by McPharlin and
myself (article in puppetry yearbook II, 1996) but little is known about
Thomas Holden's visit to South America in 1887 when he also intended to
revisit California. D'Arc's also claimed to have visited Alaska. It
would also be interesting to know more about Jewell, Middleton or the
Tills.

Whilst I have files on over three hundred Victorian marionettists and
have carefully documented their time in England it is more difficult for
me to find out about their time abroad though I have been greatly helped
by Richard Bradshaw in Austrailia and Mrs. Yoriko Iwata in Japan.

I have prepared a 10,000 word survey of Victorian marionettists which
is to be included in the Puppetry Yearbook III, due for publication next
month.

I understand that you are Marionette Consultant for Puppeteers of
America and hoped that you might be able to provide further information
yourself of help me get in touch with marionette historians/collectors
who can. I shall of course make full acknowledgement of any information
that I recieve in future publications.

			Yours sincerely,

			John Phillips

Well, anyone out there know anything about this subject? HELLLLP!!!
