Does it have to be a modern camera? I think the old-fashioned style with the
accordian lens would be easier to add personality to. They kind of start out
with personality. I would add large eyes that extended above the top of the
camera; they would be attached from about the half-way down point. (I know
nothing about the electronics, so this might not work. I'm just going for
looks.) The accordian lens then becomes the nose. It would be a nice touch
to include the ability of the accordian nose to move in and out, like it was
focussing. If you wanted to take it this far, an old-fashioned hat set on at
an angle would add to the charisma of the character. What about a moustache
to fit the period? It could attach just below the lens at the fron end of
the accordian. 

Well, that's my two cents worth. Not very technical, but maybe it will help.
