Puppet Productions "Vivanovas" have a built in threaded insert.  But I
have had them come loose during a long skit or song.  Once I use a antena
whip soldered to a BNC connector to hold  a set of drum sticks used by a
puppet. He really frailed those drums and never lost his grip.    I just
happened to have it in my junk box though and could think of anything
else.  But the BNC concept is easy to lock and unlock and holds tight. 
You might use the design to create your own locking system.
They can be found at Radio Shack.
