I think that would be undesirable because you really want the arm rod to be restricted in two of the three axes of motion. The kind of connection I like allows me to hold the rod out and the hands stay "thumbs up". But I can twist the rod and the hand will bend at the wrist. Also, I can drop the arm rod and the hand will still hang in a natural position. If it were firmly attached so that there were no movement, when I dropped the arm rod, the hand would still try to stay "Thumbs up" position, which is quite unnaturea. If the arm rod were attached by a ball and socket joint, then there would be no way to control the hand by twisting the arm rod. Hmmm... that wasn't much help, I only said what I want as an end result of the hand/rod connection and why the ball and socket joint wouldn't work. I still don't have a design that I really like for a detachable arm rod.
