Subject: Arm Rod Grips

Hi All!

I'm following the arm rod thread with great interest and I just wanted
to add something that I found useful while I was working for the Center
for Puppetry Arts.

If you want a REALLY great grip for the puppeteer's end of the rod get
some 1/8" nylon rope and soak it in some Tite-Bond wood glue then wrap
it around the end of the control rod and keep on wrapping it up until
you get the desired handle length. After it has dried, dip it a few more
more times in more glue to build up a protective coating that seals the
rope onto the rod and keeps it from unraveling. I found that this kind
of grip gives the puppeteer a lot of control over rod movements without
the possibility of the handle splitting, like on a conventional dowel
handle. Also, because of the ribbing effect of the rope, there is a
slip-proof grip.

Hope you all are enjoying the holiday weekend!
