I have been having the exact same discussion with some others in the past,
and more reciently on a BASIC STAMP maillist (it is a programmable chip). I
had anticipated having to create just such a device from scratch. But it
seems you have beat me to the punch, or have found a resource.
I hate the idea of creating a bunch of custom electronics. I was even
considering baseing my work on the Gameboy with a special "Gameboy Basic"
that I found a person developing. But the I realized that I was going to
spend alot of time working on it and learning the system - and then the
Gameboy is going to be discontinued soon and I won't be able to get the
necessary hardware for the Basic cartridge anyway.
If there is a product already available, that would be fantastic. I would
hope that a standard of some sort has arisen for MIDI control of servos, so
that if the particular vendor of your "MIDI to Servo" chip goes out of
business, you have a hope of finding an equivalent.
On another note, I am working with a guy who may be converting his Lighing
board to be run off the audio track of his sound. It will only play back the
SIMPTE time code which will be fed into a MIDI sequencer. Then the MIDI
sequencer will feed the Lighting board with its cues.
Obviously this would be great for animatronics as well. Fairly low cost as
well since the sequencers (even with disk drives) are around $200.

Anyway, you have me excited... Please tell more!
