A Festival of Puppet Theater 1997
Artistic Director: Eric Bass, Sandglass Theater
Producer: Mara Williams, Brattleboro Museum and Arts Center

Bread and Puppet Theater (Glover, Vermont) will present it most current
version of the Resurrection Circus. Perhaps the best known touring puppet
theater in America, Bread and Puppet always takes members of the local
community and, within hours, turns them into performing members of this
"larger than life" troupe. A true community event, which one might expect
to be filled with giant figures and powerful images and themes. (for all
ages)
SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 6, 12 NOON
LIVING MEMORIAL PARK BRATTLEBORO, VERMONT

Credo Theater (Bulgaria). Nina Dimitrova and Vassil Vassilev-Zuek, two
consummate actors, perform The Overcoat, adapted from the novel of Gogol.
This production has won numerous prizes at European festivals and is high
on the wave of exciting new puppet theater. Using minimal props and a few
puppets, created "on the spot" from simple materials, two prisoners enter
into an argument about freedom, which leads them to enact Googol’s poignant
story. By the time they reach the end, they still stand at the bars of
their cell, but, somehow, on the outside! How they get there is a wonder
of theatrical manipulation! (for adults)
FRIDAY & SATURDAY SEPT. 12 & 13, 8 PM
WHITIMORE THEATER, MARLBORO COLLEGE, MARLBORO VERMONT

September Figurentheater/Martin Bachmann (Germany) performs Lilacs for
Frieda, a quiet hand puppet story of a boy and his neighbor, an elderly
lady. In this deceptively simple piece, the boy overcomes his initial
repulsion to his frail, wrinkled, but loving neighbor. He learns to play
with her, differently from the way he would play with another child; and he
becomes especially fond of her. One day he goes to her house and finds
only her empty rocking chair, and has to learn about new feelings with
which he will live. Martin's open and direct contact with his young
audience engages their own openness to this very human look at loving and
natural death. (for children)
SATURDAY, SEPT. 13, 11 AM & 3 PM
SANDGLASS THEATER, PUTNEY, VERMONT

Damiet van Dalsum (Holland) has created, in Hollebollebear, one of the most
moving shows ever made for children, and for adults too. Using abstract
string marionettes, she tells the story of a little boy bear who has no
friends. The girls don't like him because he is a boy, the boys don't like
him because he is too much like a girl. He goes to seek a friend, or a
father, but is turned down by all the big bears. He finally meets his
friend in a bird who will take him to the sun, but it is a journey from
which he can only return as dust. I have never seen children more deeply
moved to stand up and applaud, nor parents more touched by what their
children experienced.
(for children)
SATURDAY, SEPT. 13, 11 AM & 3 PM,
SANDGLASS THEATER, PUTNEY, BRATTLEBORO, VERMONT

Theatre Manarf (France). Jacques Templeraud will perform his most intimate
work, appropriately titled Le P'tit. Known throughout Europe as the master
of "object theater", Jacques takes his audience through an ingenious romp
through the dialogue of large and small to the edge of laughter and tears.
For Theatre Manarf, anything can become a puppet! A brilliant silent
comedian and master of object manipulation, Theatre Manarf touches the most
basic themes in all of our lives. (for adults and older children)
SATURDAY & SUNDAY SEPT. 13 & 14, 8 PM
SANDGLASS THEATER, PUTNEY, VERMONT
(Jacques will also lead a week long workshop during the festival.)

Compagnie Gare Centrale (Belgium). Agnes Limbos, one of the most highly
regarded performers in the international children's theater world, also
performs to the delight of adult audiences. A gifted and versatile clown,
actress and puppeteer, Agnes has appeared at the most prestigious festivals
in Europe and North America. Her one-woman shows touch children and their
parents alike with humor and poignancy. This performance, Little Pea,
combines Agnes' own clownesque presence with puppets and objects as small
as two inches. An intimate and wonderful journey! (for all ages)
SATURDAY & SUNDAY SEPT. 13 & 14, 8 PM
SANDGLASS THEATER, PUTNEY, VERMONT

David Syrotiak (Brattleboro, Vermont) is one of America's best known
marionette players, and a grand-master of his art. His company, The
National Marionette Theater, has toured the country, as well as
prestigious festivals in Europe and South America. David's work is
characterized by a fine aesthetic and expert manipulation. The signature
of his work is his acclaimed solo marionette concert, usually performed for
adult audiences. Especially for the festival, David will select sections
appropriate for younger audiences and offer In Concert for Young People.
(for older children)
SUNDAY SEPT. 14, 11 AM AND 3 PM,
17 FLAT STREET , BRATTLEBORO, VERMONT

Puppetmongers (Canada) are storytellers who pride themselves on
experimenting with the medium of puppetry, pushing the traditional limits
of the art. Their work overcomes cultural and national barriers, taking a
positive approach in dealing with many fundamental issues of our time.
Their shows have been enjoyed by over half a million people in North
America, Europe and Asia., and have been recognized by Citations of
Excellence from the Union International de la Marionette. The Puppet
mongers have become an important inspiration to children and artists
worldwide. Their program will consist of two pieces, Walidad The Grass
Cutter and The Brick Bros. Circus.
FRIDAY & SATURDAY SEPT. 19 & 20, 8 PM
SANDGLASS THEATER, PUTNEY, VERMONT

Masque (Connecticut) creator, Larry Hunt, integrates music, movement, masks
and puppets. In Animan, Larry plays with the similarities between animals
and humans, underscoring respect for all the worlds creatures. Masque has
performed to rave reviews around the world, from Hong Kong to Australia to
Poughkeepsie, New York! If you think you have seen masks by looking at
them museums, look again at Larry Hunt! (for children)
SATURDAY SEPT. 20, 11 AM & 3 PM
SANDGLASS THEATER, PUTNEY, VERMONT

Catherine Sombsthay/Companie Mediane (France) performs Valse Mathilda, an
extraordinary, unusual piece with no apparent story, no language, but which
only a child can understand. A small room contains a Christmas tree, of
sorts., made of revolving wheels. On each wheel hang Christmas cookies,
and on each cookie is a face of a man or woman or child or pet. It is a
true tree of life, in which we see that the concept of family is much
bigger than our usual definition, and in which children see their own
stories in the ever revolving relationships and comings and goings of the
recognizable cookies. This is a show which will puzzle adults, and puzzle
them even more when they see the fascination in the faces of their
children. (for children)
SATURDAY SEPT. 20, 11 AM & 3 PM
MUSEUM & ARTS CENTER, BRATTLEBORO, VERMONT

Dockteaterverkstan (Sweden) has toured the world with their unique "puppet"
performance - one with no puppets at all! With Bare Hands is a work
dedicated to communication across all frontiers with the simplest means.
Accomplished manipulators Anders Lindholm and Cecilia Billing create comic
and touching characters with dexterity and "bare" necessities, revealing
that the essence of puppetry is truly the art of the performer. (for all
ages)
SATURDAY & SUNDAY SEPT. 20 & 21, 8 PM
17 FLAT STREET, BRATTLEBORO, VERMONT

Sandglass Theater Company (Putney, Vermont). As host puppet company for
the festival, award-winning Sandglass Theater will present a new solo
performance by company co-director Ines Zeller Bass, for children.
Archibald's Cheek is the story of a young boys runaway red cheek. As
Archibald tries to catch it, he travels through worlds of miniature
adventure. Ines performs this delightful story on a new and enchanting
rotating "belly stage", on which the story revolves. This performance will
be a world-premier.
