Dear Michael,

Whiting is natural calcium carbonate that has been ground,washed and
refined.When used with glue sizes or other aqueous mediums it
retains it's whiteness. Making it an ideal filler
for gesso and paper mache. The best grade is known as Paris White;the
second best;
(the usual paint store variety) is often called
Extra gilder's; and a third grade, used mainly for putty, is called
"Commercial.
Chalk is artificially prepared calcium carbonate
in its whitest,finest and purest form, usually
called precipated chalk. It has the same
chemical composition as whiting, but contains no impurities ,and is one
of the whitest sub-
stances in use.
Any well stocked hardware, paint or builders
supply will always carry whiting.

                                                   Cheers.
