The Awaji Puppet Theatre from Japan has started it's US tour in Ohio.
These are the play dates:

11/10/97 LIMA , OH Memorial Hall
11/12/97 COLUMBUS, OH Ohio State University
11/14/97, 11/15/97 NEW YORK, NY Japan Society
11/16/97 DETROIT, MI Detroit Institute of Art

I saw them in Cleveland Saturday, and they are wonderful. The Awaji
tradition is that which eventually developed into the Bunraku. The figures
and their three-person manipulation techniques are very similar, as is much
of the repertory (Saturday, they did the final act from Chikamatsu's The
Love Suicides at Sonazaki). They differ in that they contain a strong
ritual element to their work -- Saturday, they performed a ritual to bless
a sand mandala being created by a group of Tibetan monks in the museum (I
only found out after, alas). They demonstrate both the manipulation
techniques and structure of the figures during the performance. If you
are anywhere near one of these venues, I highly recommend that you go see
them.
