As a family of puppeteers we look forward to the opportunity of attending
POA festivals. Although we didn't attend the POA festival in Toledo, we
did attend the last Great Plains regional Festival in St. Louis 2 years
ago. At that time our teen age daughter, Sarah, had the privilege of
attending a workshop which was designed for youth. Thanks to Leon Van
Weelden she learned a great deal about puppetry. Leon supplied fabulous
paper mache heads for the kids to make their own non-moving mouth glove
puppets. They also learned basic manipulation techniques and then did a
performance. Since the time of that festival, Sarah has made a line
drawing of her puppet which we are now using as our logo for business cards
and our letterhead. We are very grateful that she had the opportunity to
attend the festival and be educated in the art of puppetry. And as far as
a teenageer not being caught dead at a festival...........Sarah has
discovered that she can earn more money as a part-time puppeteer than
saying "would you like fries with that?"

Now then about the POA by-laws and how it affects membership status. As I
understand the recent mailing on the 1998 Election Issue indicates that the
board proposes that the family status of membership is being
changed........it is my understanding that the commitee suggests that the
membership category of family be changed from a family unlit with children
to the family being described as the same as a Class A membership which is
two single adult members who live at the same address and all children who
live at the same address. This is somewhat similar to the classificationf
or a Class C Couple membership which is 2 adults living at the same address
(no children). In the past the family membership only had one
vote..........the proposed change indicates that the family membership
would now have 2 votes instead of one............Perhaps Jim Malone can
verify if this is correct or not........but this is how it reads and it
does need to be clarified as to what the committee actually meant
here.....has somethilng been edited or omitted from the original copy as
designated by the group who came up with this mess? What is the benefit
for the change.....is it from one vot to two or what?????????????
