The fiber optics idea sounds like a good one, though I've never used any
myself.  I think Edmunds Scientific (<- ?) carries various diameters, in both
glass and plastic (which I assume is flexible).  I'm sure someone on this list
has the catalog/web site info, and probably more knowledge about fiber optics
than I.
