Presented by Shadow Artist, Maria Bodmann
Free Art Classes for Youth

Opening with a Free Performance - "Alice in the Shadows"
to introduce potential students to the residency. Everyone is welcome.

Wednesday, January 20th at 6:30 pm
The Bob Baker Marionette Theater
1345 West First St.
(at Glendale Blvd) Los Angeles

---------------------------

A special performance of "Alice in the Shadows" will be presented at the
Bob Baker Marionette Theater on Wed., Jan. 20th at 6:30 pm to kick off the
1999 Making Shadow Characters Residency under the auspices of Youth Arts
Services, Cultural Affairs Dept., City of Los Angeles. Youth ages 12-21
interested in art and theater are invited to participate in this special
opportunity to learn the basic skills of making shadow characters. "Alice
in the Shadows" will introduce students and guests to shadow theater and
will provide inspiration and background for the participants. In this
unique combination of art, theater, and music, lacy shadow images are
projected on a linen screen with a natural oil lamp or electric light. The
shadow artist manipulates carved leather figures between the lamp and the
screen to bring the shadows to life.

The workshop includes 15 classes focusing on design, carving and painting
techniques, as well as manipulation, and story telling through the vehicle
of shadow puppets. The figures are made of rawhide and are used in a
theatrical context.. Over the course of the program, students will create
original characters or choose from traditional designs. They will learn
how to manipulate puppets and act out short stories, providing practical
experience in theater as well as visual arts. Classes begin on January
27th at 4:30 and 6:00 pm and will culminate in a public exhibition and
short performance. Call Maria for an application and more details.
