Subject: PUPT: re: workshops

Hi, Susan!

I'm a librarian and have done workshops for children and for adults both
inside and outside the library. I charge a flat rate which includes sup-
plies, but only because I have a lot of accumulated scrap. If I had to go
buy things, I'd charge extra.

I usually have only an hour for my workshop, and I cover (quick like a bunny!)
the following:

1. What is a puppet? Examples, history, voice, movement.

2. Each participant gets a blank fabric or paper hand puppet. I then pass
out cards with character descriptions, such as "a wicked witch", "a grouchy
man", "a jolly clown", and the students come up with voices for their puppets.

3. I pass out action cards. These say things like " two puppets who haven't
seen each other in many years meet on the street". Participants, in groups
of two or three, act these out without words.

4. I talk about story and script. What makes a story a good puppet play?
Etc.

5. Everyone makes a puppet, using any of the available materials any way they
like. I usually ask everyone to make an animal.

6. We put on a play -- something like there's a new baby at the zoo. What
shall we name her/him?

That's it! Good luck, and have fun!
