Subject: Re: PUPT: woodcarving

For anyone pursuing this thread with a view to taking up carving, I would have
to put in a word about poplar-- it is one HAIRY wood. By this I mean to say
that once carved, it has woody hairs all over it. This makes any attempt at
advanced detail frustrating. Sanding is a tedious process, and if you paint
with oil-base paints (although I know already how few of you do), the problem
is compounded. The last time I carved poplar, I vowed it would be my last. I
got spoiled by carving mahogany-- when I was looking to carving a lightweight
wood with less detail.

And I might mention that as to wood weight, when that becomes critical, I
hollow out the wood either up through the neck or in through the back of the
head. The body, thighs and upper arms can of course be whatever lightweight
wood one prefers, as they seldom call for major carving.
