A recent Laurel and Hardy script I read (obviosly they were not puppeteers, but puppeteers could learn a lot by watching L & H movies) was only 5 pages - there was a lot of blank space, which allowed for bits of "business" and ad libbing. Several of the last few so-called "artsy-fartsy puppet shows that I saw had what I believe to be serious flaws. One is that they were too damned seious. To make points about dark, serious subjects, it is a good idea to lighten up a moment or two earlier. The point would be made with much more impact. I don't mean with a pie in the face, but rather in the spirit of the play. Another flaw is in the pacing. Certain productions could be set with a metronome. It is difficult to pay attention when a serious production drones on with the same pace throughout.
