One of the popular ways for a solo marionette artist to do is a variety
show, with each puppet performing it's own act. Then you get into a lot of
the trick marionettes.

Bob Brown does do story shows with marionettes as a one person. So does
Christopher Piper of the Puppet Co. One of the "tricks" is using a double
airplane control, so that you can get the puppet to walk with one hand.
Another "trick" is hanging the puppet off the bridge so that it's standing
on stage, and then you can reach over and pull an hand string or wiggle it
for a little movement.

Hope this helps.
