Subject: PUPT: celluclay

Part of my job is making puppets for our puppet shows in our Children's
Dept. Our hand puppets have been made of celluclay for years. I tend to
mix it with fairly warm water a bit at a time until a stiff bread dough
consistency is achieved, then I let it sit for a while (all the little
dry bits will be absorbed into the mass). We make our armatures out of
styrofoam balls, eggs, etc. and and styrofoam bits to make noses, chins,
foreheads, cheeks, etc. The celluclay is applied directly on to the styro-
foam which sort of grabs it. If you work using sheets of plastic wrap
over the celluclay while pressing it on to the styrofoam, you can get
fairly smooth finishes. The only real problem with this method is that
the celluclay surface is quite thin and if you drop the puppet you can
cause it to dent or crack. Hope this helps.
