  Dave, please, certainly feel free to use the materials you are used to and
are good at.  You are already an artist and a performer - which means you
have the majority of things you need for puppetry.

  As for the moving mouth puppets - it is the popularity of the muppets
which have made that style of puppetry so common now... but it wasn't always
so. Plus, many of those who focus on the moving mouth puppets tend to forget
that the most important aspects of puppetry are not related to that moving
mouth.
