Subject: PUPT: My 2 cents' worth!

Ohhh--my first post to this mailing list--the conversation was just too
stimulating to hold back any longer!

Just curious as to why we've not yet compared ventriloquists to the
magicians/puppeteers stats we've been tossing about (i.e. shorter, fatter,
etc.)... Or do we not wanna know what's in their trunks (he he he)?! I
wonder if THEIR (magicians, vents) mailings lists/newsgroups are trying to
figure out our population as we are commenting on theirs. Or, since there
seems to be more crossover (as in vents who also consider themselves
puppeteers), maybe there's more respect between these two factions? I'm
fairly new to puppetry (only been doing this professionally for 8 years now),
and came at it as an actor, so was surprised to find that SO MANY puppeteers
frown at vents and vents at puppeteers... I'd always put them pretty much in
the same category! Though I'm learning as I go. Magicians have always
seemed to have their own publications, meetings, festivals, etc., so I
haven't thought too much about how they fit into the grand scheme of things
(thanks for your spooky insight, Preston--it amuses me to think of you as a
magician--nothing up your sleeve, eh ?!?! Somehow I don't quite believe
that!!). Anyway, I feel the same sort of disdain (perhaps too strong a word
but the only one that comes to mind right now) from some of my theatre peers
toward puppetry as I feel from my puppetry peers toward ventriloquism.
Curious! Saw very, very, very little vent stuff in Seattle. Was this by
design or happenstance?

Any thoughts out there as to why ventriloquism is/isn't a puppetry art? Or
is this a well-discussed topic that was all figured out before I joined the
list? If so, can someone just post a synopsis of the "findings"?

Had an awesome time in Seattle. Good to see some of you, meet some of you.
How are we all settling back into our "normal" routines after that amazing,
intense week?
